The plan was I would drive the car and we’d follow Julio and Carlo (brothers who own the company that do this). We had them take the top off but, as we were about to pull out, I decided they should drive us out of the city as it was morning traffic time. Good thing too because even they got a bit turned around. I would have totally lost them! We switched places once we were out of the main city and I got to drive. They were taking us to see different castles in Chianti.
Stop 1
I’m pretty sure my parents have this picture in their house.
Cheryl took pictures as we drove along (that’s Calo and Julio in the Jaguar in front of us). I left a lot of room because the car didn’t have power steering or power breaks (I say people of the 1930’s lived like animals!) so stopping barely happened (and shout out to Lauren Hendrey for having me lift heavier weights at the gym...it took serious muscle to steer around all the windy, hilly curves!).
Stop 2: Brillo Castle
This is still a residence so we could only go in certain areas. Carlos, Julio and I started walking up the hill to it. I was having trouble keeping up with long legged Julio. We were heading up when they realized they could drive up so they went back to get Cheryl (did I mention Cheryl’s been a trooper through this trip with aknee injury? No stopping her!). When they reached Cheryl Julio told her he had trouble keeping up with me! He didn’t want to be impolite and ask me to slow down. I continued walking up and thought I was going to die by the timeI reached the top! But totally worth it!
They have their own church...
And scary stairs down to the crypt underneath
So how does this work? Do people who live here just call they’re friends and say ‘hey, you want to come over to my castle and play on the trampoline’?
We had lunch at the castle restaurant. I had rabbit taurine and guinea fowel tarentini.
Stop 3: Castle Di Maleto
Stop 4:
This is what an olive tree looks like (not in season yet so no olives)
After the last castle we headed back to FlorenceWe stopped a little outside of the city so Julio could drive back in (we were now at the evening commute and it would have been ugly trying to follow them in).
Final thoughts for today:
Can’t believe I went to Chianti and didn’t have Chianti (I was driving...). Although Carlo told me they had a group of peeps from Texas here last week that took 3 cars (the 2 Morgan’s and the AlfaRameo). They drank too much at lunch so coulddrive (so total of four cars with the car the people that work for Julio and Carlos had plus these 3 Texan clowns). They had to call other people to come to drive the cars. Yikes.
Kat Mitchell: here is the shot of Grover posing for the next Whitesnake video
Cheryl was going to take a selfie of us driving in the car but last minute cut herself out so here I am behind the wheel
